The Knoll Condominiums. Specialty Galvanized Metal Coating
Location: Indianapolis, IN
Property Type: Multifamily / condo style residential community
Project Type: Specialty metal preparation, priming, and coating
Scale: Eight stair stringers and associated railings across four buildings
The Challenge
The Knoll Condominiums had galvanized metal stair stringers and railings across four buildings that needed coating. Galvanized metal is a difficult substrate, standard paint products and preparation methods don't adhere properly to the zinc coating on galvanized surfaces, leading to premature peeling and failure. The community needed a contractor who understood the technical requirements of this substrate.
What We Did
Beacon completed a specialty exterior coatings project focused on the galvanized stair stringers and metal railings. The process included:
- →Cleaning with commercial grade degreaser to remove contaminants from the galvanized surface
- →Hand tool surface preparation using wire brushing and scraping
- →Application of appropriate primers specifically formulated for galvanized and ferrous metal substrates
- →Finish coating of stair stringers and railings to match the existing property color scheme
The Outcome
Proper product selection and surface preparation for galvanized metal is what makes the difference between a coating that lasts and one that peels within months. By using the correct degreaser, primers, and finish products for this specific substrate, the coating system is designed to adhere properly and provide long term protection.
This project is a strong example of specialty metal coating work involving proper prep and product selection for difficult substrates. For condo communities and multi family properties with exterior stairs, railings, and other metal components that require more technical coating systems than a standard repaint, this is the type of work Beacon handles.
